London's Oxford Street May Evict `Cheap' Stores, Official Says

London's Oxford Street May Evict `Cheap' Stores, Official Says

Oct. 11 (Bloomberg) -- London may evict ``cheap'' or rundown stores on Oxford Street, the city's main retail area, to improve the thoroughfare and fend off competition from shopping malls, said Simon Milton, leader of the local Westminster Council.

``We must be clear that maintaining a reputation for being quality street, not the bargain basement, is essential to keeping the West End ahead of the chasing pack,'' Milton said in a speech to retailers in London yesterday.

Milton, London Mayor Ken Livingstone and retailers are discussing a plan to increase investment in the street, which includes department stores John Lewis and Selfridges, and attracts about 200 million visitors a year. The proposals include replacing buses with a tram and making the area more friendly for families and pedestrians.

New Book by Pam Danziger, Shopping: Why We Love It and How ...

STEVENS, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Americans love to shop! At least the majority (70 percent) do who say they often or regularly shop just for fun. In the last few years as the retail industry approaches $4 trillion in sales, the number of retail shopping destinations has exploded. With many more stores available to them, shoppers today demand more when they shop than just to select merchandise — they want new experiences too.

Some of the nation's largest retailers, notably Gap, Pier 1, Sharper Image and Zale, have been slow to respond to the new trends in shopping. Others are making historic changes to transform shopping in their stores to make it more fun. For example, Macy's has just gone national, rebranding its 800 regional department stores and launching an aggressive advertising campaign to the upbeat tune "Dancing in the Streets", while Wal-Mart has abandoned it's 'one-store-fits-all' model for a local initiative based upon a neighborhood demographics that gives local managers more control over the stores' merchandise and the shopping experience.

Consumers Procrastinate Online Holiday Shopping

Consumers Procrastinate Online Holiday Shopping

Holiday shoppers are expected to spend $32 billion online this season, with purchases happening well past ground shipping cutoff dates. That's according to "Online Retail Holiday Forecast, 2006," a report from JupiterResearch.

The expected $32 billion in online sales accounts for an 18 percent increase over last year.

"This holiday season, a lot of growth will come from increased spending," said Vikram Sehgal, research director at JupiterResearch. "There are more people buying online, but the creator of growth will be in increased spending per consumer buying throughout the holidays."

The number of shoppers will likely reach 114 million, a 6 percent increase over the 2005 holiday season. "The percentage of the population that doesn't buy online is fairly small," said Sehgal.

Energizing Economic Transformation through Venture Capital

Energizing Economic Transformation through Venture Capital

Previous speakers discussed details of private equity financing and strategies: such as fundraising, completing due diligence work, and examining exit strategies. I want to take a step back, and look at a more macro picture: and to discuss with you how we can stimulate "economic transformation in Nigeria through venture capital."
2. It is generally agreed that official development assistance from multilateral and bilateral institutions would be inadequate to support Africa's long-term development needs . Africa's long-term development must be driven by economic growth from within, and this requires private capital.
3. In preparing for this lecture, I took a look at some of the work which had been done on private sector development in Africa, and what the existing gaps were.
